The current research focus of Dr. Gibson's laboratory is on the fate and transport of pathogens within food systems with a focus on human noroviruses and fresh produce as well as retail food safety.

Research Goals:

  1. Develop novel methods for the recovery and detection of foodborne viruses from a variety of food products.
  2. Explore the utility of bacteriophages in controlling pathogenic bacteria in both food animal and clinical settings.
  3. Develop methods to mitigate human norovirus persistence on fomites including novel and economical strategies with application outside of the food industry.
  4. Increase education and outreach for food handler and consumer awareness of human norovirus with respect to food safety.
